Hi! My name is Tida (tee-duh) Ranumas and I am a sophomore living in Brokaw with my cat named Sasha (she doesn't respond to that so I just call her "meow meow"). I am majoring in Psychology and minoring in Gender Studies. My hometown is in a suburb called Wilmette (about 20 minutes away from Chicago) and if I'm being completely honest, I like being away from home! I've noticed that I do extremely well when I'm able to interact with others, which makes the situation caused by COVID-19 extremely taxing on me mentally and emotionally. I hope campus is able to safely open up by late spring or next fall!
Even though I have no experience with film courses, I am really excited to be taking this class. Since I am Asian American, I want to learn more about what that specifically entails. I know I have the experiences of an Asian American, but I want to create more meaning with those specific experiences. My parents are from Thailand and since I was born here, there have been numerous cultural tensions between the values my parents share with the values I've formed throughout my life. I also believe that this class can offer me more topics to bring up to them to help me better understand their perspectives.
In Crazy Rich Asians, I was able resonate with the belief that Americans are only interested in their happiness. I would hear that from my parents, especially my Dad, constantly, creating a lot of built-up frustration. I'm still unsure of why one's focus on happiness is such a taboo thing in most Asian cultures, but maybe this class could help me better understand that! If not, I still believe there are important takeaways from the class.
Your cat is beautiful!! I’m definitely on the same page as you with regard to wanting to learn more about what it means to be an Asian American.
ReplyDeleteActually, focusing on happiness is not a taboo thing in Asian cultures. However, some people take responsibility more importantly. For example, in the film, Mrs. Yang wants her son stay in the Singapore for their family business. Some people think that family business is their responsibility and it is the most important, but other people think happiness is. In my opinion, it depends. Each family has their own cultures. But yes, we can learn more about that in this class!😆
ReplyDeleteYour cat is so adorable say hi to her for me
ReplyDeleteFirst of all your cat is gorgeous and seems very happy! I laughed when I read that you call her “Meow meow” because I call my cat “Maw maws” 😂. They should maybe meet sometime I’m sure you’ve heard about Mango. But yes, cats are great I didn’t realize that until I got my own.
